ECLetters: Vendor Highlight Series

"No matter where you are in life inspire and empower the women around you. Success is never reached alone and wisdom and wealth are sweeter shared" -Mizzfit

We love strong businesswomen who are taking the wedding industry by storm and we want to share them with you, too! Each month we will highlight some of our favorite photographers, hair and makeup artists, calligraphers, florists, estheticians, and other industry professionals to give you a glimpse of their incredible work and dedication to brides and grooms.⁣⁣

Today we are showcasing Erin from ECLetters!

Start by introducing yourself!

Hi! I'm Erin, and I'm the calligrapher behind ECLetters. I'm located in Columbia, Maryland, serving clients in the DMV and beyond. My tagline is "modern calligraphy for your home and most special days"; I offer wedding calligraphy services, personalized gifts, hand lettered home decor, and I teach calligraphy classes and hand lettered DIY classes!

How long have you been doing calligraphy and design work?

I started learning calligraphy in 2016 for fun. I opened my Etsy shop later that year selling signs and home decor, and when I got engaged at the end of 2016, I started doing more wedding work as I prepared for my own wedding. Now, I still sell on Etsy but have shifted my focus to more wedding work and teaching. I love being a small part of my clients' special days and sharing my love of calligraphy with others!

What inspired you to begin your craft?

I was seeing all of these calligraphy videos on Instagram, and I really wanted to learn how to do it!

What's on your playlist right now?

I'm a huge Jonas Brothers fan and have been living for their comeback this past year!

What is one thing about your business that makes you unique?

I think the teaching aspect of my business makes me unique. I love bringing friends together for a fun event where everyone just hangs out and gets creative together. It's a way to make calligraphy accessible, and I think that's so fun!

What is one piece of advice you would offer a newly engaged couple as they plan their wedding?

You may feel like you need to DIY everything, but trust me, you will not regret spending money on things that make your life or your guest's lives easier. When I got married, I stressed myself out a lot because I felt like I needed to do everything myself. I wish I had just spent the extra money! Hire professionals and enjoy the process! Wedding planning is stressful, but at the end of the day, you get to marry your best friend, and that is so exciting!

Who inspires you (it can be calligraphy specific or not)?

I have met so many wonderful creatives on Instagram, and I'm inspired by them when I scroll through my feed every day!

Tell us about one of your favorite projects you’ve done as a vendor:

One of my favorite projects this past year was for a longtime client who has brought me a lot of wedding business over the last couple of years. She got married this year and we did a full set of signs with a really tight turnaround due to a big trip I was going on - I think there were 8 total, all different sizes - along with custom leather jackets for her ring bearers. SO cute. I was already grateful that she kept bringing me business in the first place, and then for her to trust me with her own wedding signage and be willing to work with my timeline meant a lot to me.

What is one thing you wish clients understood about your craft?

There is a common misconception that doing calligraphy is "just writing on things". It's a lot more than that! So much practice goes into getting the letters just right, not to mention measuring, spacing and the knowledge of what type of inks or pens to use on different surfaces or for different projects.

Share one goal you have for your business right now.

One of my goals for 2020 is to work on more weddings. I want to connect with more couples and continue to build relationships with other local vendors. I'm working on setting up some rentals (mirrors, easels, etc) which will give my couples more options for their wedding signage, while keeping things easy for them!

Share one of your most recent wins from a past project or for a past client!

My work went international this past fall! I did a seating chart and welcome sign for a wedding in Germany, place cards for a wedding in England, and (this was a special project) signs for my best friend's wedding in Ireland! I was matron of honor and it was really cool to see my work "in the wild" at her wedding as a guest, too!
